The ten-seater mobile toilet installed by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) near the slum area in Tathawade was stolen, according to PCMC official, who filed a police complaint.
The PCMC health department officials reported that the missing toilet was mounted on a tractor trolly.
The toilet was installed in 2017 under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, an initiative of the government.
A case under Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against unidentified persons at Hinjewadi police station on Tuesday and the matter is being investigated.
Police officials said the incident is suspected to have happened between 12 noon on April 10 and 11 am on April 11, according to the complaint.
The total cost of the toilet is estimated to be ₹1,50,000. The plastic toilet was blue in colour and had doors that opened on two sides of one booth.
The toilets were installed in the area, located near the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway, according to the police. The health department had submitted a written application to Hinjewadi police.
“The official concerned was on leave. When he returned and looked into the application, he called the health department official to understand the situation. We then advised them to file a formal complaint,” said police inspector (crime) Ranganath Unde of Hinjewadi police station.
