Vikas Chaudhari, a student of Sinhgad Institute of Technology, Kusgaon, Lonavla; and Rushikesh Nevare, a resident of Akole, were seriously injured after the Bajaj Pulsar bike they were riding caught fire following a collision with an Innova car near Kusgaon toll plaza in Lonavla on Wednesday night.

According to Lonavla Rural police,Vikas and Rushikesh were bleeding and lying unconscious under the bike when it burst into flames. They were on their way to the college hostel in Pune city after a trip to Lonavla.

Eyewitnesses reported the accident to the police. According to them, Rushikesh was driving the bike and rammed into the Innova car near the toll plaza after the car took a sharp U-turn without giving any indication. As soon as the accident happened, the bike burst into flames.

Police sub-inspector Amit Thosar said,“Looking at the manner in which the bike caught fire, it might have been because of the friction between the bike and the road. We have collected samples from the spot and have sent them for chemical analysis. We have also recorded statements of the victims.”

Cops are investigating the cause of fire. Initial reports suggest that the fuel tank could have had a leak following the impact, which lead to the fire. Having suffered severe injuries, both the youngsters were rushed to a hospital nearby.
