Even after elapse of 10 days when employees of a cash replenishing van were robbed of Rs 50 lakh outside a State Bank of India ATM (automated teller machine) here on January 9, clueless cops are still groping in the dark to find a lead.
Unhappy over the failure of Kapurthala police in controlling the increasing robbery incidents in Phagwara, Jalandhar inspector general (IG), Zonal 2, Lok Nath Angra directed deputy inspector general (DIG) Kunwar Vijay Pratap to supervise investigations into robbery cases at Phagwara.
The station house officer (SHO) of the Phagwara police station was also suspended on January 10 after "he failed to control the increasing crimes".
As per information, when cash van employees Deepak and Dharamvir - accompanied by a security guard and a driver - were coming out of the ATM at Hargobind Nagar after feeding Rs 5 lakh around 2.30pm, armed miscreants alighted form a Maruti Swift car and intercepted them.
The miscreants reportedly snatched a bag containing Rs 50 lakh from Deepak at the gun point and fled the spot, while the guard and the driver were in the van parked at some distance from the ATM booth.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the armed men were waiting outside the ATM booth. "The nearby shopkeepers chased them, but they escaped," an eyewitness said.

{{/usCountry}}Gursewak Singh Brar, Phagwara superintendent of police (SP) said police had prepared sketches of the suspects. "We have got some strong leads and the accused will be arrested soon," he said.
