12 people fined for smoking in public

The district health department fined as many as 12 people and collected fine of Rs1,550 from them under section 6 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, for smoking in public areas as part of their drive on Monday.

A task force under district health officer (DHO) Abnash Kumar conducted the drive at bus stand, Jawahar Nagar and Kocher Market area. Kumar said they were planning to conduct similar drives in future also.

The team that conducted the drive comprised food safety officer Yogesh Goyal, drug inspector Lajwinder Kumar, Rupinder Kaur from anti-narcotic cell and assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Tarsem Singh.
