BSF deputy inspector general (DIG) MF Farooqui on Sunday shared the details with the media. “The troops were on high alert, since there were inputs about the possibility of smuggling from the area,” he said.

At about 9.35pm on Saturday, the BSF troops had observed movement on both sides of the border security fence and challenged the intruders. Finally, when the troops open fired, the smugglers fled under the cover of darkness and standing crop. Later, on combing the area, the BSF found a plastic pipe stuck in the security fence. Inside were 11 packets of heroin. Another five packets were at 200 metres, and one more lay a little ahead.

'Pak Rangers involved'

Replying to a question, the BSF DIG said since the drug was seized just 200 metres from the international border on the Indians side, it was clear that Pakistani Rangers were involved. "In the past also, Rangers have denied gunbattles incidents of between BSF and smugglers," said Farooqui, adding that some jawans could also be involved.
