A 22-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping his seven-year-old neighbour at Ram Nagar in Jamalpur area.

According to the father of the victim, it was only after they protested since from Tuesday evening that the police registered an FIR in the case and initiated action.

He alleged that earlier the police were pressurising them to not register a case into the matter. However, after they protested, a case of rape was registered on Wednesday morning and the accused, Rajinder, was arrested.

In his complaint, the victim’s father alleged that Rajinder, who was his neighbour, lured his daughter to his room with chocolates and raped her. When the family came to know about the incident, they approached the Jamalpur police station to register an FIR. However, the police refused to register an FIR.

Later when the family protested and approached the media, police was forced to register a case into the incident, he alleged. Police then took the victim for medical examination.

Refuting the complainant’s allegations, Jamalpur station house officer (SHO) Sukhbir Singh said a case was registered against the accused under section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 8 and 10 of the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Act, and he had been arrested.
