Confirming the development, Punjab education minister Dr Daljeet Singh Cheema said the union minister had called him up personally, after which, he had assigned the inquiry to the Patiala district education officer (DEO). A team from the Patiala education department visited the school on Wednesday to record the statement of the teachers and the other students.

DEO (secondary) Harinder Kaur said the victim’s father, who lived separate from his wife and child, had also recorded his statement, in which he had claimed that he had seen the child a few minutes before his mother that day and not noticed any injury mark on his face. “The inquiry team has summoned the victim’s mother, Ritu Rani, for clarification,” said the DEO.

Patiala senior superintendent police (SSP) Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said the police were verifying the given details. Social activist Lakhwinder Sareen called for sacking the teacher and “exemplary punishment” for the school authorities.
