Forty-eight cases of burns were reported from major hospitals across the city on Diwali night.
Most of the patients were discharged after giving treatment and only a few were admitted.
Total 20 patients with burn injuries were reported at Guru Teg Bahadur Charitable Hospital; 13 at Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), besides a senior citizen who developed breathing problem due to air pollution; nine patients came to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital; three cases of burns were reported at SPS Apollo Hospital; two children with burn injuries came for treatment at Deep Hospital; and one case had reported from Lord Mahavira Civil Hospital.
A 22-year-old woman from Abohar was admitted to the CMCH after she received 85% burns from Diwali lights. A 75-year-old senior citizen came to the hospital with breathing problem due to the increased level of air pollution, but was discharged. Besides, seven patients were treated for hand burns, five for eye injury, including two children, at the CMCH.
Dr Sanjeev Uppal, professor and head of department of plastic surgery and in-charge of emergency at DMCH, said, “Out of nine patients who came to the hospital, three were children. Out of these, three patients reported eye injuries and rest had received burns on hands due to bursting of crackers.”
At Guru Teg Bhadur Hospital, 19 patients were discharged after first aid for the minor burns, but a 29-year-old man was admitted as had received 2-3% burns while bursting crackers. However, he was discharged on Friday.”

Dr RK Karkara, senior medical officer, Lord Mahavira Civil Hospital, said, “We received only one patient with minor burns. The number of burns injuries seemed to have decreased this time, may be due to preventive measures or out of awareness among people.”
The number of medico-legal cases at the civil hospital has risen this year to 60 on Diwali. Dr Karkara said, “An accident case was also reported at the civil hospital on Diwali.”
