The victim Paramjit Kaur of Begowal in Kapurthala was married to Sukhwinder Singh of Jalalpur village in Tanda. Paramjeet's father, Gurcharan Singh, had complained to the police that her daughter was being harassed for dowry. He added that Paramjit had been thrown out of their house by her in-laws. On March 27, 2011, he had dropped her back with her in-laws and the very next day he was informed that his daughter had been set ablaze, Gurcharan had stated. He said he found Paramjit struggling for life in Tanda civil hospital, and she died on her way to the DMCH Ludhiana.

He claimed that before her death, Paramjit had told him that she had been set on fire by her husband and in-laws. Taking circumstantial evidence in to account, the court took it as a dowry death and convicted deceased's husband and his parents. A fine of Rs 20,000 has also been slapped on each of them.
