In a breakthrough, the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) claim to have arrested a man and seized 8-kg heroin and a Pakistani mobile phone from his possession.
The arrested has been identified as Sukhjinder Singh. One of his accomplices who fled the spot was identified as Malkeet Singh.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, SSOC AIG Rashpal Singh claimed, “After a tip-off, a special team led by inspectors Harwinder Singh and Gurdeep Singh was constituted and a trap was laid near India Gate on Attari Road. When Sukhjinder and Malkeet were spotted, the police party reacted. Sukhjinder was arrested whereas Malkeet managed to escape.”
Two cars were also seized; during search, 8-kg heroin worth Rs 40 crore and a Pakistani mobile phone were recovered, he added.
The AIG said, “Preliminary investigations have revealed that the duo indulged in cross-border smuggling of heroin and was forwarding the same to different destinations like Amritsar, Ludhiana, Chandigarh and Delhi. It was also revealed that this was the third consignment retrieved from the border by Malkeet and forwarded to Sukhjinder.”
The police officer said investigations were on to unearth the complete nexus. The Pakistan connection of the consignment is being worked out. The exact area from which the consignment was pushed into India was being identified and more arrests were likely, he said.
