Nathupur might be a village by all standards, but it is here that the foundation of the bustling Millennium City was laid when realtor DLF purchased land in the village in the 1980s.
Currently, the population of Nathupur, which continues to live in the shadow of Gurgaon city, is roughly 15,000-17,000 with a voters’ strength of about 4,500, which is enough to attract here every leader contesting the Lok Sabha polls.
But what’s unfortunate for the village is that the leaders have kept on neglecting its various needs — roads, sewage system, power, water, and village chaupal (meeting place).
A chaupal located in the middle of the village and which the village elders say is at least two generations old is in a neglected state.
“Every leader, who is contests elections, come to hold meetings in this chaupal but none of them so far has spend a single penny to upgrade its condition,” said Jagat Singh, an elderly resident of the village.
The boundary walls erected around it have been damaged and there is no caretaker to maintain cleanliness here. “It used to be under the village panchayat prior to 2008 when the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) came into being. But the successive village heads have also been neglecting it. The chaupal is an important place where we hold big meetings, ceremonies and it is shrinking in size as well. With rising population people have built houses around the chaupal. Earlier, there used to be enough open space around it,” said Pratap Singh, another elderly villager.

“I remember in one assembly election, my village had the highest percentage of polling (around 90 per cent) but when it comes to civic amenities there is zero development in the village,” said Birender Singh, adding that sitting MP Rao Inderjit Singh, their MLA Rao Dharampal and the local councillor, Sundar Singh, are all aware of the village’s problems.
