The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday welcomed the probe report of justice Markandey Katju into the Behbal Kalan police firing that claimed lives of two youths, and demanded action against the cops named in the report.

Justice Katju, under the banner of the ‘People’s Commission’, had on Saturday released the probe report, naming Faridkot senior superintendent of police (SSP) Charanjit Sharma, now suspended, and other cops for allegedly opening fire on the crowds protesting against the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib in October last year. The commission recommended strict action against the police officers, who ordered the firing without a magistrate present at the scene.

“AAP also demands the government to make public the call records of the then SSP of Faridkot,” party senior leader Sukhpal Khaira said in a statement here. The party also urged the government to ensure justice to the aggrieved families and victims of the police firing, supporting the demand for `1 crore compensation and a government job to the kin of the deceased.

Khaira said the Badal government had set up the justice Zora Singh commission to look into the firing incident just “to hoodwink the people”.

“It has been a usual practice for the senior Badal to appoint such politically motivated commissions of inquiry in order to get a clean chit from them,” he said, pointing to the AN Jindal commission that probed the book scam during the tenure of Sikandar Singh Maluka as the education minister.
