The jailbreak attempt was around 3am on New Year's Day. "Rana and Sewa Singh broke one of the iron bars to escape but security caught them before they could make it to the outer wall," said deputy jail superintendent BS Bhullar. A case was registered. The assistant sub-inspector of Punjab Police whom Rana is charged with killing had laid down his life guarding the honour of his daughter.

Efforts are on to investigate how the two captives managed to get a saw to cut the bar, inspector Gurjinder Singh, station house officer (SHO) of Amritsar Cantonment, has said. In a fast-track court, the ASI-murder trial, in which Rana is an accused, is almost in the final stage.

The officer was killed on December 5, 2012, at Chheharta near here after his daughter was intercepted on her way to her tuition class. Rana allegedly had been harassing the girl for the past few days before that day when she had decided to call up her father on spotting the stalker near the tuition centre.
