Close on the heels of the Faridabad incident, the Sonepat police have booked two cops after the body of a 14-year-old Dalit boy, who was taken in custody by them on Wednesday for allegedly stealing four pigeons, was recovered from a deserted house of his uncle in Gohana.
The deceased, Govinda, was a resident of Devipura. Soon after his body was found at the house in Shiv Colony on Thursday, the agitated family members blocked the Panipat-Rohtak railway track, demanding the arrest of the two police officials for allegedly murdering him. Following the protest, deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Vinod Kumar reached the spot and assured the family members of registering a case.
Govinda’s kin said that on October 21, Lal Singh of Gohana had filed a complaint of theft of his four pigeons, two mobile phones and `5,000, at the police post on the Jind road. Suspecting Govinda’s role in the crime, cops asked the family to produce him in the police station. In the evening, Govinda’s elder brother Gautam took him to the station, where the cops took him in custody, said the family.
The family members alleged that the police officials demanded `5,000 for Govind’s release. Later, when Gautam and his mother reached the police station, the cops reportedly informed them that Govinda had fled.

The family members termed it a “custodial death”, alleging that injury marks were spotted on his body. While denying the allegation, Sonepat superintendent of police (SP) Abhishek Garg said, “The body has been recovered from their house, but still we have booked two police officials.” Garg said the probe was on and the police were waiting for the post-mortem examination report before adding charges to the FIR.
