Sources said chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had initiated the process of putting Jaggi under suspension and also that a case was being registered against him under the Anti-Corruption Act.

This follows the publication of a news item in Hindustan Times on July 14.

On Wednesday, Inderbir Kaur, Jaggi's wife, visited the vendor at Dandi Swami Chowk, from where she had been buying vegetables for the past one decade.

Pal, the owner, was away, and his nephew was running the shop. Soon after the boy asked Kaur to pay for the vegetables, she allegedly threatened him with dire consequences.

An hour later, the municipal corporation's tehbazari wing, which penalises hawkers and vendors for violation of rules, arrived at the spot and allegedly ransacked his vend and threw the vegetables on the road. The corporation men allegedly returned on Thursday and Friday as well, pressing the vend owner to apologise to the commissioner's wife.

Jaggi was not available for comment.
