Stepping up its campaign to make Amritsar tobacco-free, the district administration on Saturday conducted surprise checks at various hotels and eateries and fined them for not displaying boards against tobacco use.

Various teams of the district administration under deputy commissioner Priyank Bharti conducted checks and fined those not abiding by the instructions.

In a press release, the administration claimed that popular hotels and restaurants, including Ista, Khyber, Crystal and Friends, were checked and it was found that they had not erected boards against tobacco use. The raiding teams fined them.

Saying that efforts were on to make the holy city tobacco-free, additional deputy commissioner SS Gulati said, "The administration was committed to achieving the target of making Amritsar tobacco-free by August 15 and this campaign will be possible with the cooperation of the common man."

Hoardings against tobacco are being erected at government establishments and various public places. The administration teams are also continuing with raids and have fined people using tobacco on public places, he added.

In case the team found that adequate boards against tobacco use had been erected at public places and people were not using tobacco at public places, it would write to the state government to declare Amritsar tobacco-free, said the officer.

Of late, the administration had been taking measures to make people aware of the harmful effects of tobacco consumption.
