Already coming to terms with a delayed monsoon, the residents of three Jalandhar villages are now living under the fear of wild boars that have been moving around in their fields for three days now.
Women and men working for farmers in the three villages near Jalandhar - Lesriwal, Sikandarpur and Alawalpur town- said they spotted some wild boars a few days ago and now feared that the animals might attack them.
Chhotu, who works for a farmer in Lesriwal village, claimed he saw an adult wild boar that was four feet in height on Friday. "It was easily 200 kilograms in weight," he said.
The villagers, who have already approached the police for help, said that this was the first time that they have witnessed such a thing.
The wild boars have also been sighted in the fields of nearby Sikandarpur village and Alawalpur town. All the farmers have complained that apart from causing panic, the animals had also damaged their crops.
Jalandhar range forest officer Rajinder Singh said he had received a complaint. "Our staff has confirmed the presence of wild boards in the area. We will take the necessary corrective step," he said.
