Since December 24, 2012, he was under treatment after an assault during a hotel brawl being blamed on youth Akali leader Maninder Pal Singh "Sunny" Johar; his nephew, Manadeep Singh, Rishi Banda, and some other people.

Johar and others are charged with looting and attempt to murder. Non-resident Indian (NRI) Paramjit Singh Passi, an acquaintance of Mand, is complainant in this case. The suspects are in judicial custody in the Ludhiana Central Jail.
