Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister Balwant Singh Ramoowalia on Tuesday said the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) will not be able to make any inroads into UP politics ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections there.
Interacting with mediapersons during his visit to Amritsar, the former SAD leader said people will vote for Samajwadi Party, of which he is a member.
Ramoowalia reached the holy city on a train along with around 900 pilgrims from UP. They will be paying obeisance at the Golden Temple besides visiting Jallianwala Bagh and IndiaPakistan border on Wednesday.
Commenting on the SAD’s decision to contest UP elections on 40 seats, Ramoowalia said: “In a democracy, everyone has the right to contest elections from anywhere. Whosoever contests the polls, the people of UP will only vote for Samajwadi Party.” The seasoned politicians, however, refused to comment on politics in Punjab.
On quitting the SAD, Ramoowalia said: “What’s important is to serve the people honestly, wherever it may be.” He added it was a matter of pride for him to bring so many pilgrims to the Golden Temple.
Earlier, the special pilgrims’ train sponsored by the UP government received a warm welcome at the station. After visiting various places in the city, the pilgrims will leave for other shrines in the region.
