Amid minor incidents, polling smooth for Jalandhar MC

Barring two incidents of violence reported from different wards, polling in another 58 wards of Jalandhar municipal corporation went on peacefully, with 34% polling reported by 12 noon across the city.

Barring two incidents of violence reported from two wards, polling in another 58 wards of Jalandhar municipal corporation went on peacefully, with 34% polling reported by 12 noon across the city.

In the first incidence, Varun Dheer of ward number 19 was injured after an alleged attack by a brother of Congress rebel Amit Dhall who is contesting the polls as an Independent.

Dheer alleged that Amit's younger brother Rinku, his uncle Shyam Lal and person named Chanchal and three unidentified persons attacked him outside polling booth number 4 in Dhann Mohalla.

He charged them with indulging in bogus polling and attacking him when he objected. He was taken to civil hospital where police recorded his statement. A case was to be registered against the accused at the time of filing of the report.

In the second incident, SAD and Congress supporters along with those of an Independent pelted each other with stones outside a polling station in Basti Shiekh area in ward number 47.

Looking in to the seriousness of matter returning officer Swatantra Kumar Airi reached the polling station. Heavy police force was deployed outside the polling station to avoid any untoward incident as hundreds of suppers different political parties gathered there.

Additional deputy commissioner of police, headquarters, Navjot Mahal also reached the spot. A meeting was on between candidates to resolve the issue.
