In yet another case of open manholes leading to tragedies, a 12-year-old boy on Monday died after he fell into an uncovered manhole near his house in Gate Hakima area here.

The boy, identified as Upinder, slipped into the manhole at about 3pm when he was playing near Fatahpur, while his body was recovered about 2km from the place of incident.

The boy was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead, claimed police.

Confirming the incident, station house officer (SHO) at the Gate Hakima police station inspector Amrik Singh said, “The manhole was uncovered and the boy who lived near-by slipped into it while playing. The cops, who reached the spot immediately, made effort to recover the boy. However, his body was recovered from the main outlet about 2km from the spot.”

The victim was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead, the SHO added.

Blaming the civic authorities for the incident, the victim’s kin and area residents alleged that a life was lost due to their negligent attitude.

Not the first incident

The incident left her family in shock, but the civic authorities remained apathetic as a result the boy lost his life.

In 2012, though police had registered a case against the municipal corporation, they are mum this time.

Besides deaths, there have been incidents wherein people received serious injuries due to uncovered manholes.
