Another Apna Ghar in news for the wrong reasons

Now a Karnal-based namesake of Apna Ghar, the shelter home in Rohtak that courted controversy earlier this year, is in the news for the wrong reasons. The district administration of Karnal on Saturday handed over the medical reports of 11 children - allegedly beaten up and maltreated by the management of Apna Ghar, which should not be confused by the one run by Jaswanti Devi- to the police.

The alleged abuse of the children came to light after the district administration shifted the 11 minors, including five girls, from the shelter home on July 30. Karnal deputy commissioner Renu S Phulia on Saturday told Hindustan Times that the district administration was yet to seal the shelter home run by SM Educational Charitable Society.

Phulia added that there was no complaint against the home management until the children were interviewed after being shifted to a new place. "Lack of open space and presence of a mobile phone tower atop the tiny commercial area were among the main reasons behind the shifting of the children. Since the Apna Ghar management failed to find a spacious accommodation as per our instructions, we decided to shift them to a healthy environment with various facilities," the DC said.
