Another crater on a road near Maharaja Regency appeared after rainfall lashed the city on Monday night. The crater is around eight to 10 feet deep which has surfaced due to haphazard installation of wires by telecom companies.
A major tragedy was averted when the rear tyres of a car got stuck in the caved-in portion of the road on Tuesday morning. Though it was taken out safely, such incidents can result in an untoward mishaps.
A team of municipal corporation (MC) found that a pipe that was installed to lay wires by a telecom company had damaged a sewage line, which lead to the road cave-in. It was repaired later on by the civic body.
It is worth mentioning here that the sewage line at the same point was damaged recently in this month, which had resulted in a crater on this road.
An MC official, seeking anonymity, said the wire laying process by the telecom companies damages the sewage lines. "Improper installation of wires is damaging the roads in the city,"he added.
In the past, craters have appeared on Pakhowal Road, Kitchlu Nagar Road, Chandigarh Road and others due to the improper wire installation process. In some cases, the roads were dug without taking approval from the civic body. In the case of Pakhowal Road and Chandigarh Road, the MC had also given complaint to the police as the telecom companies had not taken any permission to install wires. Despite such incidents, the MC has not learnt any lesson to keep a check on the installation of wires in the city.

A city resident, Ajmer Singh, said, "Senior officials should be present when the telecom companies install wires on the city roads. If any firm is found installing wires without permission, MC should take strict action so that no one can dare to do the same."
MC additional commissioner Ghanshyam Thori said, "I will look into the matter and take required steps. If any firm has attempted to install wires without permission, MC will take action. However, the companies generally take permission before installing the wires."
