Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal visited the drug de-addiction centre here on Sunday and said the anti-drug campaign launched by the state government was getting an overwhelming response as youths were visiting drug de-addiction centres to get rid of the habit of drugs.
Talking to mediapersons on the second day of his tour here, the chief minister said that the two-day visit has helped him in understanding the remedy of the problem of drug addiction. He said that this visit has enabled him to take stock of the services imparted by the drug de-addiction centres to drug addicts adding that he would try to further improve the services provided by these centrer after consulting the experts and officers accompanying him.
The chief minister reiterated that to make sure that the de-addicted youth could live a life with dignity; the state government would open 22 rehabilitation centres across the state within three months. He also announced that Sangrur's drug de-addiction centre will be upgraded from 10 beds to 20 beds.
Badal said that to make sure that drug addicts do not fall prey to this menace again, special emphasis would be laid on imparting skill training to them for enabling them to be self- reliant.
PYC workers arrested, released
Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) workers were arrested for protesting and showing black flags to chief minister Parkash Singh Badal against the lathicharge and arrest of Dalits in Balad Kalan village of Bhawanigarh sub-division of the district.
Led by Poonam Kangra, general secretary of Youth Congress, 33 workers and leaders of Youth Congress, gathered at the Mahavir Chowk to show black flags to the chief minister. The police arrested all the 33 protesters and released them after the chief minister left.
