Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa said here on Wednesday that the perception among a major section of the people that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was indifferent towards minority communities was further reinforced by his not observing the tradition of the prime minister hosting the Iftaar party.

"The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), which used to champion the cause of minorities for years, should understand this harsh reality and make its stand clear on this sensitive issue," said Bajwa.

In a statement, Bajwa said this was for the first time that the tradition of the prime minister hosting Iftaar party dating back to more than half-a-century had been violated.

He pointed out that Modi, during his visit to Amritsar in the run-up to the elections, did not go to the Golden Temple to pay his obeisance, the shrine which is visited by every dignitary while in Amritsar.
Bajwa addressed poll meetings in villages including Gurthari, Pakka Kalan, Pakka Kothe, Pakka Khurd, Phallar, Sekhu, Tarkhanwala, Sukhladhi and Raman.
