Deputy commissioner Rajat Aggarwal confirmed that so far more than 100 licences were found to be fake. "These applicants connived with others to get the licences made fraudulently," he said. "Not only will their licences be cancelled, but action will also be recommended against them."

A few days ago, the Patiala police had unearthed a fake arms licence racket operating from here. They arrested one Gaurav Arora, owner of Arora Gun House here, and seized 17 weapons, including pistols and guns, in connection with the racket.

The Patiala police said the dealer allegedly colluded with someone in the Amritsar DC's office to get fake arms licenses made for applicants from Delhi, Haryana and other states by showing them to be residents of Amritsar district.

After ordering a probe, the district administration stopped granting arms licences in the city and suspended a couple of employees of the Arms Licence branch. As the investigation is still on, the number of fake licences could go up.

"Patiala police had also asked for certain details, which we have provided them," said Aggarwal.

He stressed that each arms licence issued by the district administration would undergo field verification and for that police had already been approached.
