The current ‘lagan’ and marriage season is making political parties feel jittery, with leaders trying to ensure a high voter turnout on May 7, by exhorting people to cast their ballot before attending weddings in the evening.
Riding high on the Modi wave, the Bharatiya Janata Party is especially concerned about the large number of marriages coinciding with the polling date on May 7, with former chief minister and the party’s star campaigner Prem Kumar Dhumal expressing worry about the possibility of low voter turnout.
“When I asked astrologers about the forecast for May 7, they said the date is highly favourable for solemnising marriages. However, they also said the date was very auspicious for the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi,” Dhumal told a gathering here on Tuesday.
“I request you all to cast votes in the morning and attend functions in the evening,” he added.
He told HT, “We have asked all our party workers and leaders to mobilise voters to the cast their ballots before attending weddings.” Leaders of the Congress have also expressed worry about the ‘auspicious’ time for marriages coinciding with the polling date.
“We are aware that May 7 is being considered auspicious for tying the knot, but state Congress chief Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has already asked partymen to urge people to vote before attending weddings,” said Congress spokesman Naresh Chauhan.
