The Nishan-E-Sikhi Charitable Trust has decided to help protect endangered trees having medicinal properties and fruit trees at its in-house horticulture garden-cum-plant nursery.
The garden is running under the supervision of environmentalist Baba Sewa Singh of Khadoor Sahib, who is concerned about trees like morigna, which have medicinal value.
The environmental wing of the trust is working to identify and protect these trees by collecting seedlings and growing these in nurseries under the expert advice of Sewa Singh, the chairman of the trust. "There is a need to do more to protect these trees and plants from extinction," Sewa Singh said on Thursday.
The trust had promoted morigna, also known as 'miracle plant' during the recent Kisan Mela organised by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) where about 2,000 saplings were handed over to the university for free plantation. Sewa Singh said morigna checked blood pressure, was good for heart diseases, provides relief from knee pain and constipation, enhanced haemoglobin content in the blood and was beneficial for 300 more diseases.
The horticulture garden at Khadoor Sahib has about 40 varieties of fruit and medicinal trees and plants. The environmental wing of the trust has so far planted about three lakh trees on a 300-km stretch besides along roads, hospitals and school complexes in Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi.
