Giving a call to the Sikh diaspora for a social, political and religious boycott of the Badal family in India and abroad, former Delhi Shiromani Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) chief Paramjit Singh Sarna on Saturday said chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had attacked the liberty of the Sikh religion by invoking sedition charges against the radical Sarbat Khalsa organisers.
Issuing a statement, Sarna said the Badal government’s action was a direct interference in the religious affairs of Sikhs and had shown that Sikhs had no right to organise a religious congregation on their land and register protest against the desecration of Guru Granth Sahib in a peaceful manner.
He said it was beyond understanding how a peaceful religious congregation could be a threat to the state and under what circumstances it became necessary to invoke sedition charges against the religious leaders who did not pass any resolution against the state. He said no violence took place the day the radical congregation was held.
Sukhbir’s reaction sign of frustration: UAD
The United Akali Dal (UAD) on Saturday termed deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal’s reaction as a mere sign of frustration after the huge response to the radical Sarbat Khalsa.
In a statement, UAD general secretary Paramjit Singh said, “The gathering of lakhs of people at the congregation has left Sukhbir frustrated, that is why he is making all such statements. The deputy CM must understand that lakhs of people came to the congregation on their own and for the cause of the Panth.”
