The Punjab government’s high-powered committee meeting slated for Thursday to clear a proposal for setting up Khalsa University on Amritsar’s iconic Khalsa College campus was postponed ostensibly after political intervention.
As reported in Hindustan Times (‘Decks cleared for Khalsa varsity’, April 28), the committee headed by chief secretary Sarvesh Kaushal was scheduled to take a call on the single-point agenda of giving the Khalsa College Governing Council (KCGC) the go-ahead for building a university. On Tuesday, the higher education department had issued a notice for the meeting of this panel comprising the vice-chancellors of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Panjab University (PU), Punjab Technical University (PTU), and a representative of University Grants Commission (UGC), besides senior officers from the technical and higher education departments.

Panjab University V-C Arun Kumar Grover said he had informed the Punjab government in advance that he’d be unable to attend this meeting, while GNDU vice-chancellor AS Brar refused to speak on this matter. Sources said all panel members had been informed on Thursday morning that the meeting had been postponed.
The controversial move to set up Khalsa University was shelved five years ago in the face of opposition from Sikh and political quarters. Now, the government is making quiet attempts to push the proposal from the Khalsa College Governing Council (KCGC) led by Satyajit Singh Majithia, father of Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Punjab revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia.
