As the state's ruling family drew more flak on Friday over Thursday's incident in which one of its buses had allegedly killed a man near Rupnagar, the Amritsar man booked for the accident accused the police of framing him.
Accused Brahm Parkash claimed that it was the luxury bus and not his Hyundai i-20 car that had hit scooterist Swaran Singh near Kurali on the Chandigarh-Rupnagar road. "On Thursday morning, I was returning from Chandigarh with two of my friends. Near the Kurali toll plaza, a luxury bus overtook us and hit a scooterist. The bus turned sharply upon impact, which sent us crashing into the divider. Some passersby helped us out. Even the cops who came to our aid initially were convinced that it was the bus that had hit the scooter; but as we were removing our car from the spot, they came in again and took us to the police station," he told HT.
"The eyewitnesses supported us repeatedly, but the cops did not listen," the man alleged, suggesting that cops might have planted the scooter's body paint on the car. "I don't know why a case was registered against me. My friends and I were in a lockup all day; I don't know what the cops did to my car. I don't know to whom that bus belonged but I do know that I am being framed," he added.
Brahm Parkash was released on bail after Thursday midnight. His friend, Prabhpreet Singh, has said that their statements and blood samples were taken by force. "Why are we being dragged into this case, when it was the bus that hit the scooter?" he said.
