This is good news for boys who are in a committed relationship and also gives single girls, a reason to cheer. Because being in a committed relation helps in boosting selfesteem of males, but the females who are single, don’t need to rely on relationship for self esteem.
This fact has been established by a study conducted by Dr Tarlochan Singh, who is a psychologist at Guru Teg Bhadur Charitable Hospital.
He did a research on the topic, “Study of the effect of romantic involvement and gender on selfesteem of students”.
Dr Tarlochan Singh conducted this study on 100 Panjab University students between the age group of 18 and 25, including 50 males and 50 females in January. Of the total number of students, half of them were involved in relationship and rest 50% were not involved in relation.
The study showed quite interesting results. On one side it showed very positive impact of love relationship on males regarding self-esteem, but result was contrary in case of girls. Girls, who were single, showed high level of self-esteem.
For the purpose of proper representation of the population, initially a sample size comprising 200 students was taken, and then out of that a sample of 100 was chosen. This study got warm accolades from all sections when represented in an international conference on positive psychology held at PU in March.

{{/usCountry}}Dr Singh said, “After attaining both, security and status symbol from a relationship, the self confidence of males gets a boost. It showed that it being committed helps in increasing the self worth.”
Whereas single females feel more fulfilling. Explaining the reason, Dr Tarlochan said, “A committed girl’s self-esteem suffers, as they feel they are dependent on someone for their needs and desires. In such situation they get less opportunity to show their own sense of competence in dealing with the outside world. Giving most of the time to the, relationship they get little time to have awareness and understanding of what is true. Besides, their self respect might also diminish from the fact of sexual intimacy in our culture.”
“On the other side single males have less self esteem and therefore are able to indulge in a relationship because of it,” Singh said.
The study determined that those high in self-esteem experience romantic love more often than those with low self-esteem, and ultimately have better romantic relationships.
