The recovery of a cache of drugs from the premises of Ravicharan Singh, alias Ravi Deol, in Sangrur district of Punjab on Sunday has created more trouble for boxer Ram Singh — the sparring partner of Olympic bronze medallist boxer Vijender Singh — as Ravi happens to be the brother-in-law of Ram Singh. Ravi, 32, too, had been a state-level boxer.
Ravi’s sister is married to Ram, who was dismissed from Punjab Police after his alleged involvement in the Fatehgarh Sahib drug haul case.
Interestingly, Ravi has been declared a proclaimed offender five years ago in connection with an assault case involving a cop. He had been booked under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 384 (extortion) on August 25, 2008.
Sources in the police said Ravi had shifted his base from Sangrur to Mumbai after he was declared a PO.
As per reports, Ravi even had tried his hand at modelling and singing. He had released a music album. Ravi’s relation with Anoop Singh Kahlon, who was arrested last month in connection with the drug haul case, could be judged from the video of one of his songs. The video of song ‘Tera velly chotti da’, sung by Ravi, which is available on Youtube, showcases both Kahlon and Ram in the background.
Superintendent of police Paramjit Singh Goraya said the police had made many attempts to nab him but failed to locate him in the recent years. “Though the police had got vital clues from time to time about Ravi’s whereabouts in Sangrur and Mumbai, but he couldn’t be apprehended,” he said. “As per records of Sangrur police, he was wanted only in the assault case. His involvement in drug smuggling only came to fore during investigations of Fatehgarh Sahib drug haul case,” he said.

{{/usCountry}}After Ram’s marriage, Ravi came in contact with Vijender, to whom he used to give boxing tips. Even after winning the bronze medal in Beijing Olympics in 2008, Vijender and Ram reportedly visited Ravi’s place in Sangrur.
The police on Sunday had seized 5-kg of ‘Ice’ (Methamphetamine) and 90-kg raw material (Pseudophedrine) from the premises of Ravi. The police are hopeful that the latest seizure would help them unravel the nexus of drug smugglers in the state.
