Saying that people of Punjab had suffered too long under the Akalis, the former chief minister claimed, "These bypolls will set the tone for the 2017 assembly elections."

"These elections will prove to be the game-changer for Punjab. "Amarinder also promised the people that Patiala would “once again witness the best of times, like it did between 2002 and 2007” (during his regime) after the Akalis are thrown out. "The Patiala bypoll will mark the beginning of their end," asserted the Amritsar MP.

Claiming that he understood the pressure that state officials were in to favour Akali candidates at both Patiala and Talwandi Sabo, he said, "Do not worry! 2017 is not far off when the Akalis will be seen off and the Congress will be back in power."
