Canada-based NRI among 4 killed in road accident in Moga

Four youths, including a Canada- based NRI, were killed in a road mishap late Friday night on the Moga-Kotkapura state highway near Singhan Wala village, 11 km from here, while the speeding Swift car they were travelling in hit a stationary tractor-trolley.

Four youths, including a Canada- based NRI, were killed in a road mishap late Friday night on the Moga-Kotkapura state highway near Singhan Wala village, 11 km from here, while the speeding Swift car they were travelling in hit a stationary tractor-trolley.

Police officials said that the deceased have been identified as NRI Husandeep Singh, 19; Swaran Singh, 23; Lovepreet Singh, 21; all residents of Gholia Kalan village under Baghapurana subdivision, and Sukhpreet Singh, 24, a resident of Nahal Khote village in Moga.

A pal of gloom descended on Gholia Kalan village on Saturday after some prominent villagers of Singhan Wala, conveyed this tragic news to panchayat members of the village.

Naib Singh, uncle of NRI Husandeep Singh, said that family members of his nephew have been living in Canada for a long time. "Husandeep, who was the only son of my brother had come to his native Gholia Kalan village two months ago."

Jayant Singh, station house officer (SHO) of Charik police station, said, "During the primary investigation, we found that when youths reached near Singhan Wala village, their car collided head-on with a sand loaded tractor-trolley, which was illegally parked on the highway. After the accident, the driver of the tractor-trolley fled from the spot," said SHO.

Gurmail Singh, deputy superintendent of police (DSP), said, "A case has been registered against the unidentified driver of the tractor-trolley at Moga city (south) police station on the statement of Naib Singh, uncle of the NRI. However, further investigation is underway at the moment."
