Over five months since the municipal corporation elections, the corporation finally seems to be heading towards getting a leader of opposition.

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) Capt Amarinder Singh has called a meeting of all Congress councillors on Monday to decide the leader of the party's councillors.

Though the city mayor was elected over two months ago, the corporation has been functioning without a leader of opposition. This had irked Congress councillors, who demanded that a leader of opposition be selected at the earliest, as it was affecting the image and functioning of the opposition.

"Capt Amarinder Singh has called a meeting of councillors not only from Ludhiana MC, but also from Jalandhar, Patiala and Amritsar, as all these corporations don't have a leader of opposition," said Pawan Dewan, president, District Congress (urban).

He said all councillors would meet the PPCC chief in Chandigarh on Monday and would discuss the issues pertaining to their respective municipalities.

There are 19 Congress councillors in the Ludhiana MC, a strength strong enough to oppose any move in the MC house ruled by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).

Meanwhile, the PPCC president has not invited any MLAs or leaders for the meeting, so that he can hold discussions with the councillors without any pressure from the warring factions.
