Former chief minister and Congress candidate from Amritsar Capt Amarinder Singh on Saturday issued a stern warning to revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia against “intimidating and arm-twisting” the people of Majitha assembly constituency which the latter represents.
“The year 2017 is not far and you will have to face the music then,” he said, while addressing an election here, with an apparent reference to the next assembly polls in Punjab.
Mounting a strong offensive against Majithia, the former chief minister said the law is already catching up with the former as he had been named in the infamous drug scandal wherein dismissed DSP Jagdish Bhola is the kingpin. “I am sure, given the quantum of evidence that the investigators have collected against him, he will be in jail for a long time,” he claimed.
He said Majithia deserved no sympathy as drugs would ruin the future generations of the state. He cited the example of Maqboolpura in Amritsar which is known as a village of ‘chittichunni’ (white scarfs) symbolising widowhood, where about 90% of the males have died due to drug addiction.
“Their next target after Maqboolpura appears to be Majitha, but I won’t let anyone do this,” he said.
Accusing the Badal family and Majithia of “amassing huge wealth”, Amarinder said they had grabbed everything that they thought could earn them money, whether it was the transport or sand business.
“This sand belongs to you and you should be able to use it,” he told the gathering while lashing out at the Badals for their “greed that led to the prices of sand going very high” during their tenure.

The Congress leader especially held Majithia responsible for the high price at which a “commodity like sand” was selling at present. He announced that if voted to power in the 2017 assembly polls, the Congress would deregulate sand quarrying in the state so that nobody was able to manipulate the business.
“In any case, I am not going to wait that long as there are other avenues also available and even if I have to move the Supreme Court, I will go there to seek justice for my people,” he said.
He also warned Amritsar rural SSP Gurpreet Singh Gill against playing a “partisan role” in the run-up to the elections.
