The students and parents on Monday staged a dharna outside Tohra government senior secondary school after locking its main gate to protest against the transfer of school staff.

Amidst the row over alleged casteist remarks and harassment of a Dalit girl at Tohra school, the education department had on Saturday transferred 16 staff members, including the principal, on recommendations of Patiala deputy commissioner. The DC had earlier submitted an interim report stating “improper” environment for studies at the school and recommended transfer of staff to improve the situation.

The protesters locked the school when it opened on Monday saying the guilty should have been transferred and not the entire staff. “The decision is affecting studies of our children,” said a protester Gurdeep Singh.

Police have been deployed to maintain peace in the village.

Akhal Takht committee reaches Tohra

A committee from Akal Takht reached the village to inquire into the matter.

School student Veerpal Kaur had written to the state SC commission in November, which had marked an inquiry to Patiala DSP (traffic). A panel headed by Patiala district education officer had submitted its report while a panel formed by the DC is yet to submit the report.

The row over allegations of casteist remarks at the school got heated when there were protests in the district and politicians made a beeline at the village. Even the Akal Takht has appointed a four-member committee to inquire into the matter.
