There are around 50 automobile agencies in the city that will be allowed to provide provisional registration certificate (RC) on the day of purchase of both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Around 4,000 new vehicles are registered in Chandigarh every month.

Under the new system, before applying for registeration of a new vehicle, the dealer will click its photograph along with the vehicle owner and chassis number, and send these to RLA office.

Thereafter, the RC will be delivered to the vehicle owner’s house within two weeks. Meanwhile, its status can be checked on the RLA website: chdtransport.gov.in.

The regional transport authorities in both Punjab and Haryana already allow this procedure for RCs.

In Chandigarh, currently registration of vehicles is done by the Registering and Licensing Authority [RLA] office in Sector 17 and sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) offices in Sector 42 and Industrial Area.

Chandigarh registering and licensing authority Rakesh Kumar Popli said, “We are hopeful of starting registration of vehicles at dealers’ end from May 15. The automobile agencies have been informed. The move will save vehicle owners from the hassle of running from pillar to post to get the vehicle’s RC.”

Provisional RC valid for a month

After a vehicle is bought, the automobile agency will click a photograph of the vehicle, along with its owner and chassis number, and upload it on a software provided by the RLA office

The dealer will show the vehicle owner a list of registration numbers available to choose from. These will not include fancy numbers

Thereafter, the agency will provide a provisional registration certificate (RC) on the spot, which will be valid for a month

The agency will send a completed file of the vehicles and details of the owners to RLA office, following which the authority will send by post a hard copy of the RC at the owner’s address within two weeks

Meanwhile, vehicle owners can check the status of the RC on the RLA website: chdtransport.gov.in.
