Before making the formal announcement, Chandumajra and Harinder, who returned from abroad, held a show of strength in which councillors and other SAD leaders marched from Tangori to the Amb Sahib gurdwara.

The post of halqa incharge had fallen vacant after the exit of Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, who deserted the SAD to join as a cabinet minister in the Uttar Pradesh government recently.

Breaking away from party tradition, SAD district president Ujjagar Singh Wadali, during a meeting of party workers and leaders on November 4, had announced that Chandumajra had been entrusted with the responsibility of halqa in-charge. Wadali had said, “Deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal telephonically told me to convey his message to party workers and leaders that Chandumajra would act as in-charge of SAS Nagar constituency.”

This is for the first time that an MP has been entrusted with the responsibility of halqa in-charge in SAD. The concept of halqa in-charge is prevalent only in SAD. Traditionally, a prospective candidate for the assembly seat or the SAD candidate who has lost elections from a particular constituency is given the charge.

Harinder is currently managing director, Punjab State Cooperative Bank, Patiala.
