Talking to HT, Shimla superintendent of police DW Negi disclosed that the creation of the data bank would help in solving crimes that involve the migrant nationals. The demand for Nepalese labourers has always been high as the Shimla district has one of the major apple producing belts.

Negi said that three machines, costing around `65,000 each, have been brought from Hong Kong and with the help of a software, it would scan and store the data of each migrant. "The data that will be stored and recorded will include name, photo, address, finger-prints and other useful information like the kind of work they are involved in. This is somewhat similar to the Unique Identification (UI) and is being adopted for the first time in the country," he claimed.

On completing the task, the machine will be permanently be stationed at new inter-state bus terminus in Shimla, where the Nepalese, on their arrival, would have to get their data scanned on the spot, Negi added.
