In the wake of Supreme Court ruling over Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue, Congress intensified agitation against the SAD-BJP government and Modi government.

Led by Congress MLA Raj Kumar Verka, party workers burnt effigy of Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal at Bhandari Bridge.

Verka said for safeguard of his interest, CM Badal, who owns land and hotel in Haryana, has had a secret deal with Haryana government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the SYL issue.

“This became apparent when the solicitor general of PM Modi filed an affidavit in the apex court against Punjab, and in favour of Haryana,” he added.

Soni said Congress will continue struggle for safeguard of interests of Punjab and farmer community, which is suffering from water crisis.

Senior party leaders, Amritsar (central) Member od Legislative Assembly (MLA) Om Parkash Soni, district Congress committee (urban) MLA Jugal Kishore Sharma, Yoginder Pal Dhingra, Jasbir Singh Dimpa, Ashwani Kumar Pappu and Vikas Dutt, were also present during the protest.

Meanwhile, PPCC secretary Mandeep Singh Manna, along with his supporters, burnt effigy of Punjab CM at Husainpura Chowk. He said the people should understand the ‘anti-Punjab’ approach of SAD-BJP government.

Hundreds of Congress workers, led by Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee (PPCC) general secretary Harminder Singh Gill burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Badal, holding them responsible for SC’s verdict against Punjab over the SYL canal issue.

Questioning the role of Badal, Gill said, “Badal did not take the issue seriously and he did not present the side of Punjab in a proper way. In such situation, only Captain Amarinder Singh and Congress leaders have made sacrifices for the state. They did not even care for their posts. On the other hand, Akalis did nothing but boast.” The protesters shouted slogans against the SAD-BJP government and Modi government. They warned to intensify the stir if the state is not delivered justice.

Gurdaspur: Acting upon the directions of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Captain Amarinder Singh, local leaders and workers of Congress burnt effigies of PM Modi and CM Badal, holding them responsible for the decision of the Supreme Court on Sutlej-Yamuna Link canal row, at Jahaz Chowk in Gurdaspur on Saturday.

The protest was attended by former Punjab minister Sushil Mahajan, PPCC general secretary Raman Bahl and PPCC labour cell chairman Gurmit Singh Pahra. Addressing the protesters, Raman Bahl said that Modi and Badal have caused a setback to Punjab through the SC verdict on Sutlej-Yamuna Link issue. Raman said Badal government has proved its failure in safeguarding the interests of Punjab. He added, “Captain, who is the saviour of Punjab waters, will not let even a single drop of water of Punjab’s Sutlej to go to Haryana through SYL, as Punjab has no surplus water to share with the neighbouring state.”

Congress workers, led by senior congress leader Viney Mahajan set ablaze effigies of PM Modi and CM Badal over their alleged hidden agenda in SYL issue, in Sujanpur on Saturday.
