City falls prey to stray dogs, cattle
Residents are irked over the stray dog and cattle menace, which is increasing by the day. Cases of dog bite are reported quite regularly. Earlier this year, a four-year-old boy was bitten by a stray dog in Rani ka Bagh locality, while 45-year-old Subeg Singh, going home from work, was mauled at Pandori village.

Ranjit Avenue resident Dev Preet Singh said, "The colony park is full of stray dogs, so we do not allow our children to go there to play."
Municipal commissioner DPS Kharbanda said, "A project report has been sent for constructing a shelter for dogs, besides regular surgical treatment to control their population."
Another major problem is of the stray cattle, which, attracted by the green belts along the roads, block traffic and cause accidents. Sometimes, the terrified animals go wild and damage property and injure people.
The problem persists in spite of five cattle sheds being run by the Punjab Gaushala Mahasangh, with the help of the MC and various charities.
Mahasangh president Ramesh Gupta said, "Dairy owners leave their unproductive cattle on the roads as they are now a liability for them. We have written a letter to the chief minister to carry out a census and tag livestock so records can be maintained. Only legal action against the defaulters can help resolve the problem."
