Though encroachment in most of the city areas is a common phenomenon, the municipal corporation (MC) is following pick-and-choose policy against encroachments.
One such example was witnessed during an anti-encroachment drive at Transport Nagar on Friday, wherein as many as 40 encroachments were removed by the MC.
Though small eateries and stalls were completely razed during the drive, the staff partially removed encroachments done by a liquor-vend and an adjoining dhaba.
Articles of small stalls running on encroached land were seized but appropriate action was not taken against the liquor vend and adjoining dhaba, instead, the MC staff gave some time to the workers at the liquor vend and dhaba to collect their articles.
The MC team only razed poles of one side of the temporary roof, instead of demolishing it completely.
“MC is resorting to pick-andchoose policy. They did not seize articles kept in the encroached area at the liquor vend and dhaba but razed small stalls completely. Like they gave time to others to collect their articles, we should also have been given time to do so,” said one of vendors at the stall.
However, the MC staff denied the allegations and said that though a few people obstructed the drive, one of the senior MC officials pacified them by saying that only the encroached parts would be razed. “We removed around 40 illegal encroachments in Transport Nagar and no one was spared,” said Abdul Sattar, , superintendent, who was leading MC team during the drive.

Following a complaint, the MC demolished as many as seven illegal under-construction shops for violating the building bylaws at Kochar Market on Friday.
A MC official said, “The action was taken following a complaint as these shops were being constructed by violating the building bylaws.”
Also, a religious encroachment was removed in Industrial Area-A. While some residents opposed the drive, police were able to control the situation by pacifying the residents.
Municipal corporation (MC) building inspector Rajiv Saggar said the encroachment was being raised in form of a temple and the action was taken following a complaint by the MC staff.
