Doctors of a local civil hospital here went on a strike after one of their colleagues was allegedly beaten up by the relatives of a patient on Monday. The strike continued for two hours.
A gynaecologist, Dr Surinder Singh was attacked in his chamber in the morning by the relatives of a patient who blamed him for negligence. Soon after the doctors and paramedical staff boycotted work and gathered outside the emergency ward to protest against the alleged attack.
"This is not the first time that a doctor has been beaten up by patients' relatives. In the past also, similar incidents have occurred. Despite reminders, we have not been provided appropriate security. We want a permanent solution to the menace", said PCMS Specialist Doctors Association president Dr Jaswinder, condemning the attack on the said doctor.
Senior medical officer (SMO) Dr Anil Mahindra revealed that a patient Ramandip Kaur had delivered a child in the hospital on August 20 and was subsequently discharged on August 22. Due to some complications, she was readmitted on August 29 and was to be discharged on Monday but her relatives protested and assaulted the gynaecologist, he added.
Dr Surinder said that he had neither admitted the patient nor monitored her delivery but had attended to her due to concerned gynaecologist's leave. It must be mentioned here that some time ago, an ASHA worker had levelled allegation of moral turpitude against Dr Surinder on which he was transferred from the hospital but after a short interval, he was posted back at the same position.

{{/usCountry}}Patient's husband Balbir Singh alleged that it was the doctor and his staff that beat him and other relatives when they insisted that the patient should not be discharged till full treatment. He alleged that during the delivery, a piece of cotton was left inside his wife's body but the SMO dismissed the charge stating that it was not possible in case of a normal delivery.
On the complaint of Dr Surinder, a case under Section 353 (assault on public servant to deter him from discharging duty), 186 (obstruction in official duty), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC was registered against patient's family members at Model Town police station.
