In a press statement issued here, Virbhadra said the decision to increase the quota would benefit the commoners, adding that he, too, had taken up the issue with the union petroleum ministry.

"I had taken up the matter with the union petroleum minister to increase the quota of subsidised LPG cylinder from 9 to 12, especially for the hill states, as it was required to save forest wealth,"he added.

"Now, the consumers will get one cylinder every month at the subsidised rate from April 2014 onwards,"said Virbhadra, adding each household would get two additional subsidised cylinders in the current fiscal year.

He also hailed the decision of suspending Aadhar-link subsidy transfer scheme, which was causing inconvenience to the common people. "I had also taken up the matter with the union government and the Congress leadership from time to time,"he added.

After the intervention of All India Congress Committee (AICC) vice-president Rahul Gandhi on January 17, the union cabinet on Thursday approved the increase in the number of subsidised domestic LPG cylinders.
