With the aim of countering BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s aggressive campaign on the social media, the Congress is set to form an ‘army’ of computer-savvy leaders in the state. They would be imparted special training at a workshop scheduled to be held in Amritsar early next month.
Co- incharge of Congress affairs in Punjab and All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary Harish Choudhary, accompanied by Punjab Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa, would convene a special meeting of local party leaders here on Thursday for the purpose, party sources said.
It is learnt that five leaders would be selected from each district and the central leadership would address the proposed workshop, where special training would be imparted to make them familiar with social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
When contacted, Varinder Sharma, a senior Congress leader and Bajwa’s close confidant, confirmed that a team of enthusiastic and IT-savvy party leaders was being constituted in the state to counter the BJP’s social media campaign.
Selected Congress leaders would be imparted training for conveying the achievements of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, especially the Food Security Act, providing direct cash subsidy to consumers, Land Acquisition Act and Street Vendors Rehabilitation Act, Sharma added.
“The UPA has shown outstanding performance with the enactment of people-friendly Acts, but these have not been communicated to the masses in the right perspective,” Sharma said, adding it was Congress vicepresident Rahul Gandhi’s idea to constitute a team of leaders for effective communication about the UPA’s achievements.
