A day after the municipal corporation's tehbazari wing superintendent alleged that the wing was unable to act against carts in Zone A due to political pressure, former councillor Parminder Mehta claimed that it was the wing and local leaders who allowed these carts to be stationed in different areas.
Rajeev Bhardwaj, superintendent of tehbazari wing of Zone A, had on Tuesday claimed that it was due to political pressure that they could not take action against carts, especially in Chaura Bazaar area that had become a haven for illegal carts. He had said not even mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria has been able to take any action against these carts despite promises.
However, Parminder Mehta, former Congress councillor and currently spokesperson for Congress councillors, claimed that Gohalwaria was not interested in removing encroachments in old city areas.
HT on Wednesday had reported that shopkeepers at Chaura Bazaar took up to Rs 500 from vendors to allow them to station carts in front of their shops. The fact is known to officials of tehbazari wing, but it has failed to act, raising eyebrows.
“It is known to all that up to Rs 500 are charged by shopkeepers for allowing vendors to station carts in front of their shops at Chaura Bazaar and other areas. But no one takes action against this practice, because everyone gets their share,” Mehta alleged.

Interestingly the current councillor of Ward No 35, Sushma Mehta, where most of these areas lie, is Mehta's wife. She had also written letters to the MC asking to remove illegal carts.
Mehta claimed that illegal carts at old vegetable market to Daresi were also stationed in knowledge of the tehbazari wing.
