Convict ends life in Faridkot jail hospital

A day after an undertrial woman tried to commit suicide in the modern jail, a convict, Manjeet Singh (40), son of Gurdev Singh, ended his life on Monday by hanging himself in the jail hospital with a piece of cloth.

A day after an undertrial woman tried to commit suicide in the modern jail, a convict, Manjeet Singh (40), son of Gurdev Singh, ended his life on Monday by hanging himself in the jail hospital with a piece of cloth.


Manjeet Singh was arrested by the Muktsar police under Sections 489 (counterfeiting currency notes) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC. A case was registered against him at police station, Baruwali, in Muktsar. A resident of Kauni village in Muktsar, he was sentenced to four-year imprisonment on February 20.

Singh reportedly committed suicide on the jail hospital premises where he went from the barracks, as per sources.

On Sunday, a woman, Tarsem Kaur, wife of Sobha Singh, had tried to commit suicide in the jail. She and her husband were arrested in a case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Malout city police station on June 27, 2012. A resident of Malout, she reportedly tried to hang herself with her dupatta on the jail premises.

There are nearly 1,600 undertrials and convicts lodged in the modern jail.
