Giving details, sub-inspector (SI) Amandeep Singh Brar, station house officer (SHO), Sadar police station, said the police had put up a checkpoint at Mehmoodpur village on Dhandhran road on Sunday. Meanwhile, the two accused appeared there on a motorcycle.
He said when the police signalled the duo to stop for checking, they tried to flee.

However, in the attempt to escape, Paramjit, who was riding pillion, fell down from the motorcycle, along with a sack consisting 15.5 kg poppy husk, while his brother Baljit fled on the motorcycle.

Meanwhile, Baljit rode towards Dhandhra village where another police team had set up a naka. When the cops there tried to stop Baljit, he allegedly attacked head constable Om Parkash with a rod, leaving him injured.

However, the police team managed to nab him. On frisking him, the cops recovered 500 gm narcotic powder from his possession.

Both brothers have been booked under separate cases of drug peddling, while Baljit has also been booked for attempt to murder.

The SHO said the accused already possessed criminal record. A case of attacking the police party has been already registered against Baljit at Sudhar police station of Jagraon on March 10, 2002.

The SHO said more important information was expected from the accused during questioning.
